| Identification | Dorsum: dark brown with one median and two lateral yellow stripes. Have a white or yellow spot in front of the eye. Dorsal scales keeled. Belly: yellowish or greenish. |
| Could be confused with | Eastern Garter Snake (T. sirtalis): has much broader lateral stripes. |
| Habitat & Biology |
Semiaquatic; lives near marshes, meadows, and streams. Swims at surface and does not dive like water snakes. Feeds on amphibians and small fish. |
| Breeding | 3-20 eggs per clutch. |
| Geographic Range | Southern New England to SC, west to LA (only panhandle of FL) north to southern IL and IN. |
