Family = Salamandridae (Newts)

Some characteristics of Salamandridae: Have usually a drier skin than most salamanders. Their costal grooves are hardly visible. Many salamandrids produce toxic sectrections (tetrodotoxins) in their skin glands and these species are usually brightly colored (aposematic coloration). This family contains 15 genera with about 55 species. There are 4 main distributions: west coast of North America, eastern North America, west to eastern Europe including northwestern Africa, and eastern India to Japan.

Species in blue font were observed in the ACE Basin during a herpetofauna survey in 2002- species in red font are presumed to occur there based on their overall range!
